How to prepare your horse for exercise in cold weather

Increasing body temperature prepares your horses muscles for work, it promotes relaxation, and prevents potential injuries while also strengthening the immune system.

  • Grooming - A great way for the rider and the horse to warm up. It removes dirt, but also smooths the coat to prevent irritation under your tack. It's a great opportunity to build a stronger bond with your horse.
  • Feeding forage - Feeding forage (hay/chaff) before exercise can help to reduce stomach acid from splashing and causing damage to the lining of the stomach. They need a plentiful ad-lib supply where possible.
  • Water provision - Important for hydration, performance and recovery. Reduction of turnout in winter limits access to moisture rich grass, so other options are needed such as soaked hay, and adding water to feed.
  • Use of a horse walker - This can be with or without rugs, depending on the weather, walker rugs are a good option if needed for clipped horses.
  • Rug your horse where necessary - Especially if clipped as it helps keep muscles flexible and your horse relaxed.
