Feeding a handful (or two) of fibre before exercise helps protect your horse’s stomach from ulcers.
When horses move, their abdominal muscles contract, and stomach acid can splash upwards, potentially irritating the sensitive, unprotected upper region of the stomach.
This is commonly known as acid splash and can contribute to gastric discomfort or ulcers.
🥕 The Fibre Fix
Feeding a small amount of fibre (hay or chaff) around 30 minutes before exercise creates a fibrous "mat" in the stomach. This helps:
- Absorb stomach acid
- Prevent acid splash
- Reduce the risk of gastric ulcers
- Keep horses more comfortable during work
This simple routine is especially helpful for horses prone to ulcers, with poor or girthy behaviour.
