Steaming hay is an effective way to support horses with respiratory issues, such as coughs, while also improving the taste and texture of the forage, making it more appealing to fussy eaters.

Steaming not only helps reduce coughing but also significantly lowers the presence of mould, dust, and spore-forming bacteria that can irritate the respiratory system.

Coughing in horses and ponies who are stabled is more common, often triggered by a combination of factors such as bedding type, forage quality, poor ventilation, stable hygiene, and even genetics.

Although your hay may look clean, studies have shown that all hay contains microscopic particles, including mould spores and bacteria, which can compromise your horse’s respiratory health.

While soaking hay is still a go-to method for reducing dust (and unwanted calories), recent research reveals that prolonged soaking (especially over 9 hours) can actually increase harmful bacterial levels by up to five times.

In contrast, modern hay steamers offer a safe and effective solution by thoroughly sanitising the hay while retaining much of its nutritional value and enhancing palatability.

DON'T FORGET a forage only diet (grazing and hay), is NOT adequate to balance your horse's diet fully. All forage based diets should be further supported by a suitable feed balancer that is beneficial for your horses individual needs.

At this time of year when the grass is growing, remember that all feed balancers are low in calories, but especially our Super Concentrated range, where 3kg will last the average horse 1 month, and so if affordable too, from only 92p per day!
