Improved hydration from steaming hay?

Steaming hay is a process that involves using high-temperature steam to reduce dust, mould, and microbial content in hay while preserving its nutritional value. But how does it influence improved hydration?

The main benefits of steaming hay for horses are:

Improved hydration and encouraged water consumption

  • Dry hay typically contains ~10% moisture
  • Steamed hay can contain up to 25–30% moisture
  • This helps increase overall water intake, especially in horses that are poor drinkers or prone to dehydration
  • Some horses eat more steamed hay because of improved smell and softer texture, and with that, take in more water
  • Particularly helpful in hot weather, during travel, or for older horses with dental issues

Soaked vs steamed

  • Soaked hay (having been submerged) absorbs more water than steamed hay BUT ...
  • Soaking removes much of the nutrient provision
  • Steaming hay uses less water, improves nutrient retention, and still benefits your horse's hydration

PLUS additional benefits including:

Reduced dust and allergens

  • Steaming hay significantly lowers airborne dust particles
  • This is crucial for horses with respiratory issues, such as Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO) or Equine Asthma
  • Healthier breathing supports improved performance and everyday comfort
  • Reduced dust helps owners too, for those with hay-related allergies or asthma

Kills mould, bacteria and fungi

  • High temperature (typically over 90°C) kills pathogens such as moulds and bacteria
  • This makes steamed hay safer for horses, especially those with compromised immune systems or sensitivities

Improves palatability

  • Steamed hay often smells sweet and is more appetizing
  • This helps encourage fussy eaters, older horses, or horses in recovery to eat more

Reduces spoilage

  • Once properly steamed and used promptly, hay has a lower risk of developing mould
  • Steamed hay should be used within 12 to 24 hours to prevent microbial regrowth
  • A more controlled and consistent method than soaking, with less run-off and less water used, so more environmentally friendly

DON'T FORGET a forage only diet (grazing and hay), is NOT adequate to balance your horse's diet fully. All forage based diets should be further supported by a suitable feed balancer that is beneficial for your horses individual needs.

At this time of year when the grass is growing, remember that all feed balancers are low in calories, but especially our Super Concentrated range, where 3kg will last the average horse 1 month, and so if affordable too, from only 92p per day!
