“Dear all, just thought I’d let you know that Maarhabi (Charlie) and I came 5th in Endurance GB’s 35th Red Dragon ‘Little Dragon 82km ER’ on Saturday in Builth Wells, Wales. Charlie vetted with a pulse of 36bpm on Friday night, and then settled down into his stable at the Royal Welsh Show Ground. My husband Adam and friend Jane erected our tent as the rain clouds drew in. Thankfully the rain didn’t really start until after 9pm but it poured until 4am! Our alarms went off at 6am and the show ground was thick with mountain mist. There was a mass start of over a dozen horses in my class and a pace car lead us along the road for a few miles before we turned off onto a bridleway and up a mountain. As we climbed the mountain it was getting lighter and brighter, and by the time we reached the top the sun was rising and the view was breathtaking. The rest of the ride was amazing – the sun burnt through and Charlie quickly presented to vet-gate 1 at 35km and vet-gate 2 at 60km. We did spend most of the event water-ski-ing due to the overnight rain and all the mountain range water sources were flooded! The top of the mountain was very similar to Exmoor and when it was fast going it was amazing – the horses loved it. We managed to navigate the course in 14.35kmph, which I was very impressed with. Charlie finished on a pulse rate of 50/52 within 10 minutes of finishing the event. We have entered the Arab Marathon in a few weeks time which I am very excited about because I’ve not had a go at it before. I start my UKCC Level 3 coaching course on 17th November after Charlie and I attend an EGB World Start and Potential training session on 10th November where we shall plan the 2013 FEI season.”
