North West Show Jumping Finals 2010

Despite the weather throwing everything it had at competitors the standard of jumping was as high over the 2 days at the North West Show Jumping Finals 2010.

Competitors travelled from 14 counties to compete at the 6th North West Show Jumping Championships having qualified from 22 clubs. With some impressive prizes on offer standards were high.

Saturday saw rain and showers all day but that didn’t dampen spirits of competitors in the 5 finals. The 1’9 final was sponsored by Gallop Magazine and Feedmark. With the champion and reserve champion receiving a subscription to Gallop Magazine the competition was fierce. Olivia Whitaker took the fastest route sneaking inside the arena flower displays to record the fastest time in the jump off but unfortunately had a pole down in the process. Joshua Aldcroft riding Cindy managed to keep all the poles up and beat the other 16 competitors in a thrilling jump off winning the Gallop Magazine Subscription and a Feedmark voucher.

Local rider Jake Smith produced the fastest double clear in the P2 Brinicombe equine sponsored Think Sound final. With a starting field of 50 riders the course was set to include some rider questions and related distances, 20 riders went clear into the jump off. Jake riding Benji galloped round the tricky course managing to do some tight turns, he took home a Tub of Think Sound and voucher so there should be no problems with Benji’s feet this winter! Jake was also the highest placed rider under 12 and won himself a Mary King Joules Jacket sponsored by Joules clothing. The Jacket didn’t last long in Jake’s possession as the next day his mother was seen wearing it as she walked the course on horse day.

Neddy’s Nibbles were the sponsor of the P3 2’6 speed class. Some careful course walking was required for a class which combined carefully placed arena flowers and displays between fences. With 4 seconds added for a knockdown several riders went for the speedy approach but poles down spelled trouble for several riders. 36 competitors tackled the course and the fastest time of the day was Jake Smith again riding Benji. He proudly took his Neddy’s Nibbles and Hickstead Horse feeds saddle cloth home with him.

The P4 final was sponsored by TopSpec. With 13 through to the jump off times were tight. Charlotte Brunt riding Jay looked to have won the class with some impossible looking turns but next to go Dionne O’Connor riding Flying Colours from Leigh and District Riding Club managed to reduce the time by 0.4 seconds. Dionne looked very pleased with her prize of a bag of TopSpec balancer presented by Corrie from TopSpec who was on hand to give feeding advice to competitors.

The last class of the Saturday Pony finals was the Robinsons sponsored 3’3 P5 Final. With valuable vouchers from Robinsons up for grabs riders carefully study a tricky course which was up to height. 8 riders tackled the course which produced only 2 clear rounds. Amy Pugh riding the lovely palamino mare Connie did a lovely fast round but unfortunately had a pole down, this left Charlotte Brunt and Jay to go. They managed a lovely double clear in a fast time to win the class. Beaming Charlotte was overjoyed with the win having been runner up in the preceding 2 classes and proudly left the show ground with her 3 sashes.

Overnight torrential rain left a soggy start to the day, but the excellent draining ground hardly left a mark on the parking fields. The gazebos were the first casualty of the day to the high winds, and several fences had to be hurriedly rebuilt as gusts of wind blew them down. The jumps had to be moved between classes to ensure the best of the going, and brave competitors walked the course for the first class in a monsoon. By midday as promised the sun came out and proved a lovely end to the day.

The H1 Dengie sponsored final had 20 competitors. Hayley Topham who had travelled form Nottingham to compete had the fastest time in the jump off but had a pole down, this was good enough to secure 4th place. The winner of the class with a fast double clear was Gabriella Kay riding Meigneint. She Won a Dengie Saddle cloth and voucher.

46 competitors tackled the H2 Rowen Barbary 2’6 final. With 21 through to the jump off the pressure was on. Heather Beard riding Chester were drawn mid field and had an anxious wait to see if their quick time could be beaten, last to go Charlie Hamer on Northern lights came within 0.2S but had to settle for 2nd place.

Corrie from TopSpec was on hand again to present the prizes for the TopSpec 2’9 Speed class. 30 riders tackled the twisty course. Karl Beilensohn riding Turn on the Style did just that, their round looked effortless with balanced turns he took 3 seconds off the time to win the class.

The Blue Chip H4 3’0 final saw 32 competitors battling for the Blue Chip saddle cloth, cap and voucher. A tough course saw 15 combinations through to the jump off, which again had carefully placed arena displays forcing riders to plan jump off courses around them. Karl Beilensohn again turned on the style to win the class with the only double clear. Zoe Woof on Felinfach Charles had travelled from West Yorkshire to take part and was rewarded with reserve champion spot having jumped an impressive round with just an unlucky pole down in the jump off.

The H5 Woof Wear 3’6 final saw an impressive track with 15 competitors tackling a carefully designed course. The style fence caused several casualties, with only 4 managing to jump a clear round. With prizes from Woof Wear the jump off proved very tactical, last to go Emma Kirk riding Patrick knew she needed to go clear or have a fast 4 faults. She looked to have the double clear but a fence down towards the end of the course left a last quick turn necessary to win the class, she proudly carried her Woof Wear tendon boots on the lap of honour.
