Mathew Sampson – Show Jumping

Mathew Sampson“I have now come back home and we have been getting everything up and running – all seems to be going to plan.

 .

“I have a few new horses and they are all going really well.  My biggest aim was to get on the European Championship team which I managed to achieve.   It started at the European trials in Wales were I was third in the Grand Prix on Chianti Classico and as a result of that I was selected for the Treetorn International Young Rider Squad and also asked to go on a Young Rider Nations Cup Team in Weirchen, Holland.  We finished second in the Nations Cup and I won the Grand Prix which was one of my best wins to date.  The following weekend we went to a 2* International Show in France which went really well.  I finished second in the small Grand Prix and won the Show Speciality Class called the Prix due Champion.  We also enjoyed a really good show at the Royal Windsor Horse Show were I took a couple of new horses.  I won a class on Saturday and also had a few other good placings throughout the show.

 .

“After winning in Weirden I was told I had been picked for the Young Rider European Championship Team. We went to Holland last week where it was held.  I was lying in the third place after the first round, but didn’t have the best of rounds on the second day which sadly dropped me out of the higher placings.”

 .

Matt has had a busy few months, including four championship shows.  The first was Scope Festival, where he won the Newcomers Master Final and the Young Riders B & C Championship.  Then, he came 2nd in the Young Riders & Newcomers Final at the Arena UK Major Champs Show.  Several wins followed on his novice horses, at the Aintree Premier Show, as well as coming 2nd and 4th in the big tour classes.

 .

The horses then had 2 weeks off, in preparation for HOYS 2009.  Matt had 2 horses qualified for HOYS, and both went on to win their classes; Newcomers and Young Riders Championship of Great Britain – a fantastic result!

.

Matt has been to an International show at Towerlands, and Belgium for 3 weeks training with Hank Nooren.  On his return Olympia will be at the forefront of his attention.
