Joseph Fernyhough Scoops Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Second Round Win at South View Equestrian Centre

The Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Second Round held at South View Equestrian Centre in Winsford, Cheshire on Saturday 30th May attracted bumper entries and spectators were treated to a ninety horse competition in which competition was fierce.

With just two direct qualifying places available for the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Championship Final at Horse of the Year Show, each rider came into the arena aiming to produce a treble clear as they knew that this would give them the best opportunity of securing a coveted qualification spot.

Twenty combinations in total made it through to the final jump off and competitors were left with a tense wait after seven treble clears were eventually produced as the allocation of the qualification places was to come down to the clocked times.

Joseph Fernyhough, aged 14 from Newtown, Powys, took the win after using a late draw in the jump off to his advantage. Joseph scooped the top spot with Ros Fernyhough’s 15 year-old grey gelding Atlantic Hill after the combination delivered a treble clear in 34.71 seconds. Joseph and his ride were drawn as the eighteenth to go in a twenty horse jump off. Knowing that he had to beat the time set of 36.62 seconds, Joseph kicked on over the fences to produce an immaculate treble clear with nearly two seconds in hand over his nearest rival.

Second place was taken by 15 year-old Henry Truelove from Brigg, South Humberside and Henry was on board his father Barrie’s 6 year-old bay gelding, Orchids Adventure. This pairing was drawn to go midway through the jump off and they secured their treble clear in 36.62 seconds. Henry faced a nervous wait as five further treble clears were produced after him, but the time proved to be good enough for not only a top two finish, but also a place in the Championship Final.

With the top two taking the direct qualifying tickets for the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Championship Final at Horse of the Year Show, the riders and ponies that finished in third to seventh missed out on their Championship qualification this time around. However, they did take home the chance to compete in the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Masters at the British Showjumping National Championships.
