A new foal is always exciting, but when it’s totally unexpected, the experience probably ranks right up there amongst life’s most delightful surprises and that’s just how it was when Holly, the young coloured mare Claire McDonald and her friend Sue had recently rescued produced a strapping colt foal named Holly’s Boy.
Tethered with no water or shelter, horribly thin and with a rug that allowed the wintry weather right through, the 3-year-old filly obviously struggled when she was driven by her gypsy owners at breakneck speed around the local roads, so when she arrived back absolutely steaming one day, Claire McDonald went out and made a successful offer for her there and then.
Consulting her vet about Holly’s health, Claire also sought Blue Chip’s help with her diet and on Blue Chip Pro, she began to improve, but the weight wasn’t going on in all the right places and another visit from the vet confirmed the surprising news that despite her youth and poor condition, Holly was in foal.
The surprises continued, as although the vet predicted a likely July foaling, Holly’s Boy made his appearance just 10 days later in mid April!
Claire says, “He is a beautiful little chap and Holly is a devoted mum. Blue Chip is now feeding mum and baby and the mare is already putting on weight evenly now she has revealed her secret! She has plenty of milk which is just as well as he is a hungry little boy and already skipping around the field, giving her plenty to do keeping up! Blue Chip has taken the worry out of feeding our poorly rescue mare and now her newborn foal too. We just love watching a happy, healthy mum and baby growing stronger every day. It really was a ‘Blue Chip surprise’!”
