Katie Midgley and Alex Chester, Sheffield High School Sixth Formers and Riding Captains of the newly founded Equestrian Team decided to thank Bob and Elliot Emery of the Plough Inn at Hathersage for their sponsorship at a recent event held to raise funds for the Sheffield High School Equestrian Team. It was fitting then that they decided to thank them on horseback!
Katie, riding her horse Gargallo, and Alex, riding Gypsy Enterprise, set off from Grindleford to present The Plough Inn with a thank you letter from the team for sponsoring them and enabling them to raise an amazing £916 for team funds.! Katie and Alex organised a shopping evening with wine and canapés, which were kindly provided by the Plough Inn, and a coffee morning the following day. Guests were able to shop at stalls set up for the occasion by Phoenix Cards, Mimu with simply stunning handbags and accessories, Yummagumma – foodie heaven, On a Wick and a Prayer with their fabulous range of scented candles, Jijou with a gorgeous jewellery range, MooMoo – gifts from the heart and Georgina Humphrey, Equine Portrait and Fashion Specialist.
The Plough Inn – Hathersage – is situated in nine acres of land upon the banks of the River Derwent. A family run business for the past twenty years. ‘We thrive in delivering first class food and customer service in a relaxed and informal environment. During our refurbishment last Spring, our main focus was to update the original décor, whilst still retaining the charm of a sixteenth century inn. Due to a high demand for accommodation in the Peak District, we have converted another 3 bedrooms, taking our total to nine bedrooms. We provide a personal and professional service to suit the needs of individual guests’.
Katie and Alex set up the team at the beginning of this year and have been delighted with their success so far. Their dressage squad, Rosie Sear, Alex Chester, Georgia Tracey and Katie Midgley qualified for the National Schools Equestrian Association Championship on their first outing! The Championship will be held in Addington in October this year.
Members of the Showjumping Squad have also delivered, Cristina Moore, Sophie Roberts, Rosie Wallace and Olivia Roberts coming third in the 70cms class at Bishop Burton at their first competition.
Sheffield firm, Blue Chip Feed Ltd, is their chief sponsor and have supplied saddle cloths and caps to all the riders and a selection of jackets for the team to use. Blue Chip founder, Clare Blaskey, who was born in Sheffield, is thrilled to be supporting the High School, which is only five minutes away from the Blue Chip office and should mean that a great relationship will flourish between the two parties. “As a company, Blue Chip prides itself in spotting and sponsoring young talent, and we’re sure that over time a new equestrian superstar will emerge”.

At school, Katie and Alex, both 17, were awarded the prestigious ‘Go4it’ Bronze Awards in recognition of their efforts so far. The award encourages activities and experiences purposefully designed to embrace ‘can-do’ outcomes and positive risk taking, something Katie and Alex have certainly demonstrated with their leadership of this project, working in an inclusive way with the school.
Head Teacher, Valerie Dunsford said : “The girls have put a tremendous amount of work into setting up this new venture and securing sponsorship for the team. It is entirely their own initiative and they have risen to the challenge of raising funds towards training and entry fees. We are very proud of them and wish them every success.”
Following on from that, the school sent four teams to qualify yesterday at Bishop Burton and three of them came first in class qualifying for the National Championships in October.
