Blue Chip Feed Ltd to sponsor Sheffield High School Equestrian Team

Sheffield High School six-formers, Katie Midgley and Alex Chester, both aged 17, are putting together a school equestrian team to compete in the National Schools Equestrian Association.

.

It is a completely new venture for the school and the girls have managed to secure sponsorship from a number of local companies.

.

Head teacher Valerie Dunsford said: “The girls have put a tremendous amount of work into setting up this new venture and securing sponsorship for the team. It is entirely their own initiative. We are very proud of them and wish them every success in their first competition”.

.

Katie and Alex have the pick of 26 pupils, ranging from 11 to 17 years of age, ready to compete both in showjumping and dressage and have even found an ex-jockey on the school staff, Music Teacher, Miss Rolfe who rode on the flat against many of the worlds leading jockeys, including Frankie Dettori, Willie Carson and Pat Eddery.

.

“We are currently speaking to local equestrian trainer Lisa Morris who attended Sheffield High School from 1984-1971 and went on to be the individual British Universities Champion 1985/86 in Combined Training,” said Alex. “Lisa is qualified to BHSI level and is really keen to be involved in our training programme next year,” she added.

.

“The school has been really supportive and now it’s up to us, unfortunately our first two events were cancelled due to the bad weather but we are hoping to get out and prove ourselves soon, we are determined to do well as a way of saying thank you to everyone who has encouraged us” said Katie. “We are putting together teams for the National Schools Equestrian Association Dressage Qualifier on April 10th and Showjumping on May 8th 2011, both being held at Queen Ethelburga’s in York.”

.

The girls were keen to establish a team identity and to this end have secured sponsorship from POW for the embroidery on their NSEA team numnahs and Christopher Weeks from B-Seen Limited has given them a number of button-on competitor number holders as worn by at least three National Champions in Lincoln in September.

.

Sheffield firm Blue Chip Feed Ltd is their chief sponsor; they will be supplying saddle cloths and caps to all the riders, and a selection of jackets for the team to use. Blue Chip founder, Clare Blaskey, who was born and went to school in Sheffield, is thrilled to be supporting the High School, which is only five minutes away from the Blue Chip office, and should mean a great relationship will flourish between the two parties. “As a company, Blue Chip prides itself in spotting and sponsoring young talent, and are sure that with the 26 members of the High School team, a new equestrian superstar will emerge.”

.

At school Katie and Alex were awarded with prestigious ‘Go4it’ Bronze Awards in recognition of their efforts so far. The award encourages activities and experiences purposefully designed to embrace ‘can-do’ outcomes and positive risk taking, something Katie and Alex have certainly demonstrated with their leadership of this project, working in an inclusive way with the school.
