Becci Prepares For Her First 1* Event!

Becci has been focusing on her training these last few months due to events being cancelled because of the weather, here is a report from her, “The last few months have been really steady after another 3 of my events were cancelled.  I decided to take my young horse Lady to do some much needed dressage practice at Beaver Hall Equestrian. To my delight she behaved impeccably (thanks to Blue Chip calmer syringes!) and she won the Intro A class with 69.56%.  I then took her into the P12 and she came 3rd with 67.96%, it was very close with 1st place only 2 marks ahead of us.  They ran the competition inspired by the Olympics and we had to stand on a podium to collect our medals and sashes.  It was such a fun day and I was over the moon with Lady’s progress, she is now ready to do another 4yo BE class!

It was then Candy’s turn to shine at the Arena Eventing Final held at Vale View.  There was stiff competition and the course was built extremely tough.  In the Intermediate there was only 3 clears, Candy would of been one of those if a tight double of planks on the angle hadn’t caught her out.  I wasn’t sure if it was the sun glaring down on the white shiny planks that make her look twice but it resulted in us picking up 20pen.  We went in the Open class with only 1 clear round so far; again Candy flew round clear but the same fence that had now changed direction (as well as an added very skinny brush on the angle in the middle of the 2 planks) caused us a little problem.  She backed off the first plank, I rode strongly to get her over it but we hit the brush on a dodgy stride and she simply couldn’t get over it.  I came straight back round and she flew over it no problems; I was slightly disappointed as we would have been placed very highly jumping the important clear round with so many knock-able poles which were not an issue for us that day, a few baby mistakes cost us, but we will come back again next year with even more experience and I hope to qualify Lady for the Novice next year too.

I have lots to look forward to in the next few weeks, I am going to visit a top dressage yard run by Astrid Bolton to train with their top rider Hayley Colwell, which I am so excited about, and I hope they can improve our dressage and help me gain those extra few marks I so desperately need.

Next weekend its Candy’s first CIC* at Somerford; I wanted to enter her into this to see how she would cope over a tougher track incase I do decide to apply for Le Lion 6yo class, and I want to show the selectors what she can do at this level.  I must admit I would have liked a few extra novice runs but with the weather cancelling events everywhere it just hasn’t been possible.  It will be a tough order but I am ready for the challenge!
